White rice
Rice cooker (anyone have an old one they no longer use?)
Plain Yogurt (NOT low-fat)
Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (or any 'degreasing' brand)
Clothes pins
In the on-going efforts to always provide the best care for the shelter pets and reduce sickness, a new program has begun at the Paulding Animal Shelter.
A recent visit by a veterianarian specializing in "Shelter Medicine" provided tips on proven low-cost ways to boost the immune systems of the pets upon arrival and during their stay.
Additional sanitizing measures as simple as using Dawn dishwashing liquid to clean cages (along with the disinfectants) have proven to reduce disease in close quarters such as shelter environments or breeder/pet store establishments.
The rice for dogs and yogurt for cats is intended to sooth, cleanse and strengthen the digestive system, in turn strengthening the immune system. It is being mixed with their regular meals daily.
No, not your "normal" shelter requests, but the staff is very excited over this new opportunity to continue to provide the best care possible for these unwanted pets.
Any and all donations are ALWAYS greatly appreciated!
Great Idea!
I have some clothes pins I will bring with me today - wooden ones!
Also, I have an old rice cooker I'll donate and bring too, along with a small box of rice! I'm sure more than one may be needed
SouthernScarlett - I'm bringing some (couple) of socks with me too, and I'll look at see if there are more on the shelves (there were some last weekend I think).
kewlisa - did you get your answer? Yes, we are still taking all sizes/colors/styles/types of socks to make into small toys. Can have holes in them, just need to be clean!
lilgallowsmama - if you want to make toys and can't get ahold of mizcue, send me a pm and I'll forward you some information about sock toys and other toy instructions. It can be as simple as knitting/crochetting a rectangle of yarn (about 1 1/2 " wide x 4 " long) and drop off at shelter - that's what I have done, and then Mizcue takes them and stuffs them! or you can make the "whole" toy yourself!
and for those who might need a refresher on their donation list .......
Thanks for your continued support of the Paulding County Animal Control facility and the Paulding Humane Society!!

Sorry it's taken so long for me to get on top of this... I've been at Mercer University and haven't had much time to get on P.Com.
These can really be anything you want...but the quicker we can make them, the quicker our furry friends will have something to keep them entertained while they wait for their forever homes. This time of year they go through hundreds in a week.
This is the quickest way I know...(If you come up with something quicker, please let me know.)
With size F crochet hook, chain 12
In 3rd chain from hook Double Crochet and Double Crochet in each chain across.
Chain 2, turn, and Double Crochet in each Double Crochet across.
Finish off.
You now have a long and narrow strip. (About 1 1/2 inches by 3 inches)
Fold in half to make a square. Using contrasting yarn (I use funfur) Single Crochet and chain one in each stitch around, joining the sides together. Do two in each corner.
Before you crochet the last side together, take a pinch of catnip and wrap it tightly in some fiberfil, stuff in toy and finish crocheting the last side.
You can also do Half Double Crochets if you prefer but you will need to do 3 rows to get the correct size.
Thanks for asking how to do this ..Let me know how it works out.

I know it is probably not said enough, but we (volunteers and staff) really are so awed by the support of the community. Your donations are SO appreciated and needed.
I saw newspaper, rice, yogurt, food, toys and treats being brought in on Saturday, and all of it will be used to support those who are looking for their families (new or old) .... every bit helps in more ways than one, and the furry ones are the beneficiaries of your generosity! If they could tell you, they would, but it is left to some of us who are not so eloquent (and yes I had to look that one up) with words .....
From me, the other volunteers, the staff, and of course, our furry friends & companions....
