TIA
It is still scheduled as a furlough day for teachers so you are safe with your appointments.

Thank you for the confirmation. I did check the front page of the BOE website, but it was not listed.

I don't think that's accurate. The BOE would have to vote to rescind the Adjusted Work Schedule which had that day as a furlough day. In addition, a teacher workday on that day would solve nothing. Teachers have already made up 2 days (the week of the flood). The state can waive the rest of the days, so why would they waste the money they'd already saved with the furlough?

Who did the email come from? If we make up 4 days, that's only 1 furlough day that was taken. Where will the other 2 come from? Are the paychecks no longer going to be docked?

Oh wait, I think I get it.... So they can say two of the days we were out for floods are furlough days.... SO that means we have to work the two scheduled furlough days.... Right? Confusing! And so not fair

My calendar already shows it as a teacher workday, so wouldn't they have to work anyway?

We've only done 1 furlough day. We've already made up 2 days, so if we work 2 more, that's only 2 furlough days being taken. Seeing as how they told us to prepare for more days next year, I think attempting to make them up now is pointless.
Also, I'm hoping they've made some kind of concession for teachers who have already made appointments, plans, vacation, etc. It would be quite unfair to charge a teacher for that day, if they've gone three months under the impression that those days were not scheduled for work. I have a feeling PAGE and GAE will be ringing off the hook tomorrow if this is accurate.

well, we were out for 3 days. We have 3 scheduled furlough days, So I guess they decided to have the flood days be our furloughs and make us work on the other days. I see the point, but it still doesn't mean I have to like it!!

That's still missing 1 furlough day. We've missed 6 total days (including the week off and the 1 furlough during preplanning). We made up 2, and are to make up 2 more. That's 4 days we would have made up. That means that we're only out for 2 days, and we were supposed to take 3 furlough days. So, we're still missing 1 furlough day there.
Did that make sense to anyone but me?

That has nothing whatsoever to do with this topic, seeing as how no one is complaining about the furlough days. The complaint here would be that many teachers took the furlough days and looked at them in a 'glass half-full' way, and decided to make other plans. Now, if we're told we have to be at work, we get to choose between losing money (and leave time), or losing deposits.
It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of thing for teachers at this point.

Since I'm on a roll this week, I've got a big SUCK IT to the PCBOE as I will be taking the day off to continue with my plans. Those plane tickets are NON-REFUNDABLE!
In short, MY ass won't be at work Oct 16th AND Dec 21st.

Bus drivers just found out yesterday that we will be working next friday or we will lose our pay. If we choose not to work we have to use 2 personal days to get paid! We also have to do this again in March. We will be doing some sort of training.

absolutely....I am very angry about this. The response we were given was..."Be glad you have a job!" Ok so does that make it OK to treat your emplyees any way you choose? I don't think so!

The days during the flood were natural disasters. Furlough days in place or not, they would have been told "DO NOT COME IN." And in any situation, teachers would have been paid for these days. This was not a day they would have been in the building REGARDLESS of any other situation.
So basically they are taking advantage of the flood days to gyp these teachers out of a day off (unpaid of course), some of whom HAVE made plans on those days.
I'm looking into the legality of this, but at the very least it's wrong to do.
Other than complain on here, It's my intention to invite all of the local media channels to cover this story as well. I was told the media was welcome at the October 13th BOE meeting (6:15 PM).
I plan to attend and voice my outrage at this. Teachers are some of the hardest working employees I've ever seen. My wife works until past 5 everyday at school, then comes home and works until well into the evening almost EVERY night during the week. She accepted the furlough days as an inevitability under the current economy, but at the very least, she had a day (unpaid) off of work to take care of things she couldn't otherwise.
And to confirm, YES, the teachers were told if they HAD made plans on the 16th (so far as of my call to the school board today, the only confirmed day that the furlough was rescinded in lieu of using one of the flood days) that they must either cancel these plans or use vacation/personal days.
If anyone wants to coordinate an appearance at the BOE meeting on Tuesday, please PM me.
Mark

Thank you for being our voice. We are too afraid to speak out, we were told to deal with it and be glad we still had jobs. Please keep us informed. Thanks again

At a previous job, we were required to attend Saturday training without pay. One girl complained to the DOL and we were paid OT for the training and were even offered childcare expenses with proof required.
For some reason, Saturday training classes were no longer offered to us.

PAGE and GAE lawyers have sent a statement to the Paulding County School Board, and the lawyers are looking into the situation from a general standpoint, as well as individual circumstances.
We have YET to be told anything official from the county, instead getting staggered emails from our principals. The serious amount of professional disrespect is disgusting.
One thing I was thinking yesterday--where has Kim Cobb been? She was elected because people thought they'd have an actual voice on the school board, and when she was running for office, she was all about getting involved, and promised to stay on if she was elected. I'm irritated that she has been completely absent from these discussions.

Funny that you brought this up. I have noticed her missing as well. Perhaps the BOE is not allowed to post here?

Well, custodians and maintanance worked on Aug. 13th and we were not suppose to but we can't use it as one of the flood makeup days because it happened before the flood. September furlough was before the flood also. hmmmmmm
